I was born March 1, 1956 in Marysville Ohio, which I still call home today. I am married to Sam Gerhardstein, who is the Director of Governmental Affairs for Columbia Gas of Ohio. Together, we have five grown children and one granddaughter.
My family’s roots in Union County extend back six generations. I was born and raised on a farm in Allen Township. My father cherished his life on the farm, as well as his career as a country lawyer and Judge. Observing his gentle manner with persons from all walks of life inspired me to follow in his footsteps and join him in the practice of law in 1981.
During my thirty years in the legal profession, I honed my abilities to assess both sides of an issue, to orally express myself with conviction, to negotiate fairly, and to remain cool in the face of provocation.
In 2008, I ran in the Republican primary for Union County Common Pleas Judge, which was my first appearance on the county-wide ballot. Although I lost the primary by about 400 votes to an experienced campaigner and office-holder, I learned from the experience. Those who know me will tell you that I will not be outworked on a campaign or at any other endeavor to which I commit myself.
Public service is a way of life in our family. The health of our community was deemed to be a personal responsibility. At age nine, I cleaned roadsides with my 4-H group.
This was in addition to, and despite, the daily chores required by a farm existence. The values I learned as a child have stayed with me throughout my adult life. My most gratifying public service experience was my two-term presidency of U-CO industries, which provides business opportunities for disabled adults in Union County.
